Our Practice

Our group in La Costa/Carlsbad continues the tradition of Devotional Singing established on Candy Lane in Encinitas, CA over 30 years ago. The emphasis of our sacred singing is on "easy to sing" spiritually-based meditative, positive, uplifting and affirmational songs. The intention is to come together to create and, in the process, inspire each of us to live from our sense of our highest self... and to affirm our most divine and purest vision for ourselves and the world. The majority of the spiritual, mantra-based songs we sing have been written by well-known songwriters/recording artists such as Charley Thweatt, Michael Stillwater, John Astin, Robert Frey, Cass Smith, Scott Kalechstein and Karl Anthony and are chanted in English. They are simple chants and prayers set to music that focus on peace, love, service and compassion for oneself and others. These blessings create a healing space through which to connect with spirit, the highest essence of our being and our own inner light. This practice originates in the heart and celebrates our divine union with all of life—it's similar to kirtan except that we typically sing in English. Our circle has also inspired many beautiful songs that have been written and sometimes even recorded by songleaders involved in our circle, past and present, such as Gerry Canning, Malaya Rider, Mark Grimwood, Roger and Artemisia Hunt, Jim and Lynn Chow, Marsha Jehn, Nirava Seastar, Teeto and Donna Cheema, Denise Rhodes and Josiah Diallo.

Each time we meet we set intention with an opening invocation, and in the process of singing together often include a guided meditation and/or a stand-up song. We close with a meditative intention for the days to come, a group OM and some moments of sacred, mindful silence.
